Since Gary Trudeau's Doonesbury is a daily cartoon strip, not a news column, it doesn't seem quite right to simply seed it like an article. But Doonesbury often has the most penetrating and revealing commentary about current events around. Trudeau does it with simple, unadorned quotes that go right to the heart of what's wrong.
Today's strip is actual quotes from a Romney fundraiser that was held in the heart of the territory of the 1%, the Hamptons. (Just parking your car will set you back $40.) Going after his natural base: the people who will benefit most from the Republican policy of "Socialism for the rich, capitalism for the rest of us", Romney recently held a fundraiser featuring today's version of a medieval baron, David Koch. Thanks to the right wing dominated Supreme Court, we can't know how much Koch will spend to preserve his favored tax status, but most people think it will be around $400 million. Just him. Super rich like Sheldon Adelson (who earlier tried to purchase the presidency by buying Newt Gingrich) will be adding many millions more to buy the White House.
Here's what the 1% said, in their own words.
"Is there a V.I.P. entrance? We are V.I.P."
-- guest at a Romney event in the Hamptons
"Tell them who's on your yacht this weekend! Tell him!"
-- Carol Simmons, a guest at a Romney Hamptons fundraiser
"Obama's a socialist."
-- Ted Conklin, speaking from his gold Mercedes outside a Romney Hamptons fundraiser
"I don't think the common person is getting it. Nobody understands why Obama is hurting them."
-- guest at a Romney Hamptons fundraiser, speaking from her Range Rover
